Face the Head March 8 – 9, 2024 Amsterdam KNGF accredited 16pts

March 8, 2024 09:00 - March 9, 2024 17:00 Meibergdreef 9, 1105 Amsterdam-Zuidoost

This unique dissection course for the head and upper neck region will involve the use of formalin fixed cadavers, provided by the department of anatomy of the University of Amsterdam. Each day is divided into blocks that consist of a short presentation about the anatomy of the region, followed by dissection.

Each participant will work on formalin fixed human cadaveric head, cut in the midline (known as a sagittal section). This way you can go at your own pace, we will be encouraging you to look at your fellow participant’s dissection, this enhances your learning opportunities. At each step an anatomist will be guiding you and highlighting important learning points, related to the subject that is being covered.

During the day participants are asked to show their dissection to the other participants, this creates a peer teaching opportunity where everyone can learn from each other. Ample time will be provided for questions and discussion. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore human anatomy in a truly immersive way; we will do all we can to support you and make this an unforgettable and unique educational experience.

Your course instructors are Karl Jacobs, Shazan Chughtai and Hedwig van der Meer. Karl Jacobs and Shazan Chughtai are both anatomists and will teach you about the anatomy and guide you through the dissections. Hedwig van der Meer is an orofacial therapist and a PhD-student on Headaches and Temporomandibular disorders. She will bring you up-to-date on the most recent scientific findings regarding the most common complaints and disorders of the head and neck region.

In summary, this course will allow you to:

  • Relate human anatomy to the most common complaints and disorder in the head and upper neck region.
  • Explore the complexity of the different structures working together in the head and upper neck region.
  • Expand your perception of the three-dimensional relationships of joints, muscle and nerves.

Day One

The day will begin with a meet & greet session where participants will introduce themselves and share their motivations for choosing this course. This provides us with an opportunity to find out more about you and discover any shared interests, which helps us plan the dissection element of your day. The introduction is followed by a brief presentation about the University’s body donation system and the way the bodies are embalmed and prepared for our courses.

Moving swiftly on, after the first lecture, your next session will be your dissection room orientation. We understand that for many people this will be their first experience of human dissection and the thought of dissection may very well be daunting. Karl and Shazan will help gently guide you through the process and carefully make sure that you are happy with each step. The aim is to provide an open, safe and collaborative environment where we all work together in an effort to understand human anatomy. During the course there is no obligation to participate in anything that you do not feel comfortable with, please always feel free to say so.

Within this course you will work individually on the body part (half head), the other participants will also work on their body part, resulting in an incredible and fascinating opportunity where all participants will explore anatomy of the head and neck with all its complexities. And were everyone can learn from each other.

Skin, subcutaneous tissue including the superficial fascia and superficial muscles:

We will start dissecting by removing the skin and studying its layers, the superficial fascia, adipose tissue and the deep fascia and its relationship with the muscles. The first few hours of dissection can be difficult and might even be a little bit frustrating, don't worry you will get there, it is precise but rewarding work and an important part of your learning, providing the chance to develop the skills required with the scalpel, that you will need later in the course.

As you dissect, the continuity of the fascia will become appreciable, a fact which is rarely demonstrated in anatomy books, the more you follow it, the more it will reveal regarding its relation to underlying structures.

An hour before the end of the first day, everyone will be provided with an opportunity to share their dissection findings and then we will walk through the dissection aims of the second day.

For details about the topics of day one please take a look at the programme page of this course.

Day two

Day two begins with a debrief session, here we check in with how you are all feeling after your first day of dissection, we will walk through the programme of the day.

The second day will be all about the temporal mandibular joint, its anatomy and pathology. Guided with interesting lectures, also the second day will be one you will never forget.

During this course you will discover continuity of structures throughout the fascia and determine how structures relate to each other. New insights will help you to develop complete new theories about the TMJ and the cranial nerves pathologies.

For details about the topics of day two please take a look at the programme page of this course.
